INITIATIVES IN THE STUDY
We identified seven ‘parent’ (or main) initiatives, each having one or more branches or franchises across different locations. These became the empirical case studies for our research.
We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with key people engaged with the seven initiatives – our respondents were either the founders or holders of a key managerial role. The aim was to gain an understanding of how people running SSMs describe their own initiative, the motivation, the vision, an overview of their operation, the issues and challenges they face, and their future plans.
We carried out site-visits to all but one of the initiatives when they were open to users/members, and we were given a full tour of their premises ... greatly appreciated!
